The Dolores Simmons Snyder Scholarship in Nutritional Science,
The University of Texas at Austin

BACKGROUND: In September of 2000, the Dallas Chapter of Les Dames d'Escoffier donated $25,000.00 to create this permanent endowment for the benefit of the College of Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. The scholarship is to honor Dolores Snyder, who founded the Dallas chapter in 1984 with 10 charter members. She was one of five founders of Les Dames d'Escoffier International and served as president during her nine years on the International Board.

ELIGIBILITY:  An outstanding junior or senior female undergraduate student who is studying Nutritional Sciences in the Department of Human Ecology at The University of Texas, Austin; maintains a GPA of 3.5 in her major courses, and an overall GPA of 3.0; is a resident of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, or New Mexico; and who exhibits an interest in pursuing a career in food, wine, or the hospitality industry. She must demonstrate leadership, participate in extra curricular activities, and be in financial need to continue her studies. Provided she maintains her GPA, she may receive the scholarship more than once.

SELECTION: Eligible candidates will be recommended to the Scholarship Committee of The Ex Students' Association by the Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences. Dolores Snyder and the Les Dames d'Escoffier Scholarship Committee will review the eligible candidates and select a recipient who would then be approved by the Scholarship Committee of The Ex-Students' Association.

  

El Centro College, Dallas County Community Colleges

BACKGROUND: The original gift of $5,000.00 has grown into a $50,000.00 endowment.

PURPOSE: To benefit outstanding women in the Food and Hospitality Institute at El Centro College.

AMOUNT: Up to $500.00 a semester, with four semesters of support possible.

SOURCE: Endowment Fund.

NUMBER OF RECIPIENTS: Dependent upon funds available.

ELIGIBILITY: An outstanding woman student in any area of the Food service program who has completed her second semester at the time of receiving the award. Preference will be given to those with financial need.

PROCESS: Students will be interviewed by the scholarship committee of Les Dames d’Escoffier, Dallas Chapter, who will select the recipients and the amount of the award.

DEADLINE: March 1 each year.

The University of Houston

BACKGROUND: Established in 1989, in the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, the endowment is now worth $184,500.00. (For a number of years, the school matched our donations.)

AMOUNT: $1,000.00 to $2,000.00.  The school selects the recipients.

SOURCE: Endowment Fund.

NUMBER OF RECIPIENTS: Seven women.

ELIGIBILITY: Qualified applicants must:

  • Have completed at least 12 hours and be enrolled as a full-time student (12 hours minimum);
  • Have a minimum of 3.0 grade point average overall and 3.5 GPA in major courses;

  • Be a resident of Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Oklahoma, or Louisiana;

Selection is based on scholarship, professional potential, character and financial need according to these criteria:

  • Her activities related to hospitality (work experience, school involvement);
  • Her thoughtful and innovative approach to bringing the science of food, wine and hospitality to greater understanding and appreciation;
  • Her plans for continuing her education in the future of our industry;
  • Her range of personal activities which exemplify keen appreciation and understanding of food, wine, and the arts of the table;
  • Her potential role as a worthy representative of our industry;
  • Her need for financial assistance in finishing her education.

PROCESS: A completed application form, a resume, three letters of recommendation and a transcript of all completed college courses must be submitted.  Send materials to:

The University of North Texas

BACKGROUND: Established in 1988, our endowment of $43,000.00 has a current value of $52,000.00

ELIGIBILITY: Two women in RHM and two women in Food Journalism are eligible to receive awards. The school selects the recipients.

  

Texas Tech University

BACKGROUND: Established in 1988, the endowment is now worth $53,000.00 and benefits three women in Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional Management. The school selects the recipients.

ELIGIBILITY: A female undergraduate student in the Center for Restaurant, Hotel, and Institutional Management. Selection based on the following considerations:

  • Must have completed at least 12 hours and be enrolled as a full-time student (12 hours minimum);
  • Have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA, and a 3.5 GPA in major courses;
  • Be a resident of Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma;

Selection is based on scholarship, professional potential, character and financial need according to these criteria:

ELIGIBILITY : An outstanding junior or senior female student with 12 hours minimum in her declared major, a minimum cumulative grade point of 3.5 in her major, and a 3.0 GPA overall, who exhibits an interest in pursuing a career in food, wine, or the hospitality industry. She must be a resident of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, or New Mexico. She must participate in extra curricular activities, demonstrate leadership, and financial need to continue her studies.

SELECTION: Eligible candidates will be recommended by the TWU Nutritional Sciences Scholarship Committee to the Les Dames d'Escoffier Scholarship Committee for selection.

DEADLINES: All applications begin submission March 1 for the following school year.
