In reponse to requests for information about what to do in Hawai’i–on Oah’u and the outer islands, this post provides you with descriptions of our (1) Pre-Conference Big Island Bounty Tour; (2) Two Optional Tours to the Big Island and Maui for those who wish to extend their stay; and (3) O’ahu sightseeing and recreational suggestions compliments of the Halekulani Hotel.

Big Island Bounty Tour, Oct. 22, 2008

Enjoy a day long trip to the island of Hawaii to discover the bounty of Big Island agriculture. From our starting point at Hilo International Airport, the group will take a scenic bus ride up the Hamakua Coast of Hawaii Island where sugar once dominated the landscape.

We will stop at the Wailea Agricultural Group Farm where hearts of the peach palm is a primary crop, used by chefs at top restaurants throughout the U.S. They also produce a variety of tropical fruit like rambutan, longan, avocado, durian, lemons and limes; breadfruit, nutmeg and many other foods are grown here.

We’ll travel further up the eastern coast of the island to the Vanilla Kitchen where Hawaiian Vanilla Co. is headquartered. Here’s where you’ll learn about the vanilla orchid and how it produces the remarkable vanilla bean; you’ll also lunch on a vanilla infused menu of goodies. Then we’ll visit Hamakua Mushroom, a state of the art facility where a variety of exotic mushrooms are grown – not the usual button and cremini. You’ll meet the farmers and taste their products at each of these stops.

Dames from the Big Island will be your hosts, offering you tidbits of food history, folklore and fun along the way.

THE TOUR IS FROM 9 A.M. TO 5 P.M. BEGINNING AND ENDING AT HILO AIRPORT.  Please book your flights and accommodations accordingly.  Check in for flights is at least one hour before departure so the earliest flight back to Honolulu would have to be 6 P.M.  For further information on airlines and what else you can do in the Hilo area, please open this file: hilotour1.doc

COST of the tour is $125.00 per person (sign up through the conference registration form).
